‘The Biggest Loser’ Episode 9 Recap: Shay Out From ‘The Biggest Loser
November 11th, 2009 LimauAis Biggest Loser Shay, Shay Sorrells
This week’s instalment opens with a bombshell announcement from Ali: two people will be eliminated at the upcoming weigh-in.
She explains that the person with the lowest percentage of weight loss will fall below a new red line and be eliminated immediately with no voting. The normal elimination will then take place.
The first pop challenge sees the contestants each given a board with 50 tennis balls attached.
They must jump up, grab the balls and put them in their individual containers. The winner is the first person to transfer all the balls and the prize is a 1lb advantage at the weigh-in. Liz and Amanda can’t participate for medical reasons. Allen wins the challenge, beating Rebecca by just seconds.
The next morning Bob and Jillian visit the contestants and comment on Tracey’s elimination. “The irony of all ironies,” jokes Jillian. “I am finally able to stand the sight of the girl and she’s gone!” The trainers are stunned to learn about the double elimination and immediately get together to voice their concerns about Shay.
Jillian says that Shay is at a disadvantage because she is the biggest at the ranch, while Bob says that he feels uncomfortable playing God. Jillian thinks that they should “pull out every trick” to help give Shay the best possible chance for success.
The remaining eight contestants head to the gym for an intense workout.
Danny comments that since learning about the red line “everybody has been going crazy” and there is “no room for error” this week.
Jillian later tells him to leave the gym after he begins to struggle, before taking a tough approach with Shay, telling her to “stop crying and pull it together”.
Rudy, Allen and Liz get together to chat about the elimination. Allen worries that he might have to start playing the game in order to survive, while Liz insists that she is not as vulnerable as the others might think.
Elsewhere, Rebecca struggles with her workout and later confesses to Amanda that she sometimes struggles with even getting out of bed, while Danny shows Bob photos of him as a younger, thinner man as inspiration. Jillian later promises Shay and Rebecca that they can replicate the benefits of the ranch at home.
This week’s challenge is circus themed. Eight hoops are set up (one per contestant) and they are instructed to jump through each other’s hoops. When someone’s hoop has been jumped through 100 times, that person is eliminated. The last person standing will earn immunity.
Liz is first to be eliminated after the other contestants team up on her hoop, shortly followed by Amanda, Daniel, Allen and Rebecca. It comes down to Rudy, Shay and Danny. Shay becomes angry when the boys bombard her hoop because she thought she had an alliance with Rudy. He denies any pact but Shay becomes upset and accuses him of breaking his promise. In the end Rudy wins immunity.
Later that night, Rebecca, Amanda, Shay and Daniel reveal that they have sneaked exercise equipment into Shay’s room from the gym so that they can fool the other four contestants into thinking that they are not working out at night.
Bob then takes the contestants for a trapeze lesson before they join Jillian for an intense last chance workout.
The Weigh-In
Rudy has immunity and is first to be weighed. He has lost 8lbs this week, which is a total percentage of weight loss of 2.14%.
This week’s figures are:
Rudy: -8lbs (2.14%)
Shay: – 17lbs (4.33% – meaning she has lost 100lbs in 9 weeks)
Amanda: -5lbs (2.42%)
Rebecca: -10lbs (4.57%)
Danny: -17lbs (5.11% – meaning he has also lost 100lbs)
Allen: -11lbs (including 1lb advantage) (4.35%)
Liz: -12lbs (5.5%)
Daniel: -5lbs (1.92%)
Daniel falls below the red line and is sent home without having the chance to plead his case. “I’m proud of all you guys and I’m proud of myself. I’ve come really far,” he says. “There is no stopping me. I’m going to do this at home.”
The remaining contestants must now decide whether to save Amanda or Shay. Rebecca, Allen and Rudy all vote for Shay to go home, while Danny and Liz choose Amanda. This means Shay is eliminated.
