The man arrested in the David Letterman extortion plot named as Robert Joe Halderman, a producer for CBS current affairs news program ‘48 hours’. Robert Joe Halderman is also known as Joe Halderman.

An alleged extortion plot against US late night TV legend David Letterman was undertaken by 51-year-old Robert Joe Halderman, a producer for CBS show 48 hours, and the friend a woman who is believed to have had an adult relationship with the married Letterman.

On his Thursday show, Letterman shocked fans when he unexpectedly told the world that he had to testify to a Grand Jury in New York City today over the alleged Robert Joe Halderman extortion attempt, and that he had relations with a female employee who works on his high rating show.

“This morning, I did something I’ve never done in my life,” David Letterman told his audience during a taping of his Thursday October 1 2009 Late Show. “I had to go downtown and testify before a grand jury.”

David Letterman said to the camera that he had received a package three weeks ago containing a threat to reveal indiscretions as part of a love affair with the staffer, that Robert Joe Halderman is assumed to have thought Letterman would be embarrased by and seek to cover up.

The letter said to be by Robert Joe Halderman allegedly said “if Letterman did not pay the individual a large sum of money” of $2 million, Robert Joe Halderman would expose intimate details about secret lover affairs.

Its reported by several media outlets that Robert Joe Halderman lived with the woman that David Letterman was alleged to have had an adult affair with. Its not exactly known what relationship Robert Joe Halderman had with the Letterman staffer.

The love affair Robert Joe Halderman is said to have tried to cash in on happened before Letterman’s son was born and before David Letterman was married. However David Letterman was in a relationship with his now wife at the time of the love fling.

Police sources in say Robert Joe Halderman needed money and decided to target David Letterman in the multi-million dollar plot as he learnt of the love affair.

The woman who is yet unnamed still works on the David Letterman show but is no longer involved with David, sources said.

An internet search under the name Joe Halderman on entertainment web sites reveals that Robert Halderman, or Joe Halderman, is listed as a “producer, writer and director,” with a long resume of industry work.

Listings show Robert Joe Halderman has worked for CBS in production capacities for many years, including at CBS Sports, news and entertainment divisions.

51-year-old Robert Joe Halderman has produced news specials with Katie Couric as well as Olympic Games coverage.

Lisings show that Robert Joe Halderman directed and co-produced 2006 TV drama Three Days in September, about the 2004 school tragedy in Beslan, Russia.
